Travel Partner Wanted: Inquire Within!

Needed:
A flexible and relaxed person that will follow me around the world, split transportation costs, accommodation costs and most importantly, take photos of me in front of a myriad of landmarks around the world.

Qualifications:
Able to use a camera, point, focus and click. While one would think this is pretty easy, I have met dozens of people that cannot take a good picture. Why is this? I have no idea. When you ask someone to take a picture of them in front of the Colosseum, they probably want you to get them AND the Colosseum in the photo. Just sayin….

That’s it.

Needed:
ASAP

Compensation:
Why would you want money when you get to see cool things around the world and hang out with me? I’m pretty awesome. Just ask my mom… and my grandma. They think I’m perfect!

How to Apply:
Email 4 photos you have taken, personally, of another person. Top candidates will have international travel experience, no official job that restricts their schedules, a thirst for adventure and a willingness to take care of an accident prone world traveler when she needs it … (I’ll return the favor!)

But in all seriousness…

I have taken hundreds of selfies since I started traveling on my own and I just suck at them. I get complaints from friends and family because I post HUNDREDS of photos from my travels and about 3 photos of myself. All are selfies that show me wearing the same clothes (occupational hazard of living out of a backpack), same sun glasses, same squint in my eyes and usually the same hair style (HEY! A braid is SOOO easy and hides the fact I haven’t washed my hair in a few days!)

How do I fix this? Someone… please help me. I just want to get some nice photos of myself for you (my readers) but also my friends and family so that they can be a part of my world, even if they aren’t here with me. Pictures are my one way that I can share my experience with my loved ones. I wish, more than anything else, that they could travel with me. (Well, most of them… Some, I would NEVER travel with. Still love them but you know what I mean. There are those certain people that traveling with them would be akin to torture). But right now, that’s not a possibility so this is the next best thing.

Which brings me to my problem. How do I get those epic photos of me in front of Angkor Wat, The Pantheon, Eiffel Tower, Grand Canyon, Mt Edna, The Dead Sea, Kilimanjaro, tango dancing in Buenos Aires…. without owning a trained photographer monkey. (That would be pretty cool though, I’d name him either Chewbacca or Stewie). So, without owning a Chewbacca or a Stewie… What can I do?

  1. Having travelling buddy can be cool, they can help with pictures but you have to live with them 24/7 and that’s another challenge… which one is best? bad selfie or having someone for a shadow?

  2. I totally agree. I even try to scope out people with decent cameras thinking, ‘they’ve got to know how to take a photo.’ ERR! Wrong, me and half the building, or none. I love traveling with a friend, but sadly they can’t find the time or money so its all me! PS…I’ll be in Europe and the UK next spring for a few months LOL

    • Ha! I thought the same thing. I wonder what it is. I always try to take like 5 photos of others when they ask. Just them, the whole sight, artistic shots, the whole range. Hmmm… Oh really? We should connect and maybe meet up next spring! 🙂

  3. I’m going to make a lot of pucs in Athens, don’t worry. Otherwise I know exactly what you need – a TRIPOD! I had one of those in Paris and it saved me so much dissapointment so you should take one :p

    • 🙂 That’s a great recommendation Maria. I just worry about people stealing it. You obviously didn’t have that problem. 🙂 YES! Photo’s in Athens… Great!

  4. I’d love to but unfortunately I’m stuck with a job for now. I’m not too bad with a camera, but i have the sane problem – No one to take pictures for me so I’m stuck with selfish or travel shots without me! I’m based in UK so if you’re ever near by let me know! 🙂

  6. you make me laugh. i think they are great photos. you have been taking “selfies” before they were selfies!!!

  7. Haha! I will be really surprised if you find your travel buddy this way but still…I see you are desperate, those selfies need improvement 🙂 …Also, I think when you travel for a long time by yourself you become very independent and self sufficient, have you style of travelling and once someone else joins you it could be difficult to adapt (I am not talking about the short, a few days to a week trips you can take with other backpackers you meet on the road when you go the same direction). Good luck though!

  9. If I didn’t have that official job that would get in the way I would TOTALLY send in my pictures! What do you have planned??
Staci recently posted…The pros and cons of traveling for workMy Profile

    • Well Staci, it depends on what day you ask me. 🙂 As of right now, Europe until mid November, the US for the holidays, S. America for after the New Year, summer in the PNW and Fall is S. Africa. We’ll see what actually happens though…….

  10. I leave for Japan in February and then on through Asia, email me if you wish to utilise my photography skills! 😀

  11. At least you keep trying, and anyway if you have a travel partner surely you’ll get to know them well enough to say, “Nooo, not like that, like thiiiis” 😉

    • Sammi, You’re right! Ha! No one is a good as a professional. I guess I just need to learn how to take the ULTIMATE selfie… 🙂 I’ll work on that.

  12. LOL – why not use a small light weight tripod and the self-timer of your camera? Less arguments than with any human travel partner – and easier to dump.
Juergen recently posted…What a Perfect Day at La CampanaMy Profile

  13. Aww I wish you could find someone to take your picture for you! Or maybe balance it on a flat surface and use the timer option on the camera! Regardless I hope that you can find a partner or someone temporary to take your picture 🙂

  14. What I hate most in a selfie is the hand on the side. I now understand why people take a selfie in front of a mirror. By the way, I have seen a few people with a long pole attached to their camera taking a selfie. It may be something you should look at. It really is hard to find someone who takes pictures just the way you want. I traveled with a friend recently and she took my pictures. I can see all my pictures are above waist. Apparently, it is her thing. Good luck.
Carla recently posted…Snapping a Selfie and Checking Social Media While DrivingMy Profile

    • I agree Carla, the hand on the side is no bueno! I have see the long pole too, but it worries me that I’d smack someone in the face with it or something! Eek! Ya, others just never take pictures like we want them too. Alas, the struggles of a solo traveler! 🙂

  15. Aw I feel for you! We’re lucky travelling as a two who like to take photos of eachother so we take it for granted. A go-pro would allow you to take better selfies with A LOT more of the background (and is cheaper and less hassle than a travel buddy photo monkey!). Or asking several people at each place you’re in to take your photo so that at LEAST one of them takes a decent shot. Nice post by the way : )

    • I think you’re right about the go-pro. I keep saying no to it but the more I hear recommendations, the more I feel inclined to at least check it out. 😀 I still think a travel buddy photo monkey would be pretty cool though! Thanks for stopping by.

  16. Such a cool and funny post. I hear you about taking good pictures. Most of the time I am the one behind the camera and once in a while I would like a decent picture in front of the sights I travel to. Que a la boyfriend who usually will take a picture and miss out the sights all together or take one and the eyes are closed or one with you mid sentence…all this equals to pictures that will never see the light of day. We are slowly getting there….or better yet I have a tripod that comes with a remote so I can do it all by my self 😛

My dream is to go on the 111 day Pacific Princess World Cruise, which covers 25 countries on 6 continents?! I love to travel but 111 out to sea would just about be the end of me. I also love being near that water but not on it for that long. I sure do hope to do a cruise though. From the options above, sounds like there is something to suit everyone.

  17. I always love travelling with the best travel buddy I can be with. I can share every moment I want to have with the best person I can have. Wish to have more travel time with my best travel buddy, my husband.

  18. Adrian you are funny. I have a huge photography issue too. I’m quite good at it but my partner sucks at it. so most often than not,When he clicks me, only the background seems nice but I will be covered in complete shadow of the sky. And when I click him, it looks pretty awesome. So i bought a tripod, to take my own photos. Nowadays, you also get those monopods(like a stick) to fix your phone/camera and take a selfie. Im considering to get one of those too. All for the sake of a atleast a good photo of mine.
shilpa balakrishnan recently posted…Bali, the island of the GodsMy Profile

    • Shilpa, I’m glad that I’m not the only one that has issues. Even with a partner! Haha! I think I’ve been convinced to get one of those monopods… We’ll see what Santa brings me… 😀
